A Simple Way To Organize Your Website Information On Your Computer

We all know that being organized can save us a lot of time in our businesses and make us a lot more efficient. Often times, clients will contact me and ask me such questions as, “what is my website password?”. I realize that not everyone is extremely computer savvy and it became very clear to me that some people need a little guidance in order to get themselves more organized. What follows are some of the most simple and basic tips you can find for getting yourself more organized on your computer.

There are many different types of software programs that can help you organize information on your computer. One of my favorites is Microsoft OneNote. I like Microsoft OneNote because I can make entries and they are automatically saved. Another great feature is that I can search for any phrase or portion of a phrase through hundreds or even thousands of pages I have stored in OneNote.

Using it started getting organized without having any additional software installed on your computer. In this example we will look at how to create and store your website information in a project folder on your computer. Here’s how:

In Microsoft Windows click on the start button in the lower left-hand corner of your computer screen.

Next type the word, “computer” into the space provided and press enter.

At the top of the search screen select, “computer” by hovering your mouse over it and left clicking it.

Once you left click on, “computer” you’ll see a screen such as the one below.

You can then double-click on the hard drive you wish to use to store your information. In the example below I have chosen the “F” hard drive to store information in a folder, “A” that I had already created. It is not necessary for you to create an, “A” folder as this was simply my personal choice for the purposes of illustration. On your computer you will most likely created your folder on your “C” drive.

Once you’ve chosen the hard drive on which you will store your information you can right-click your mouse and you will see a menu presented to you like the one you see above.

Once you see the menu simply click on, “New” and then scroll up to, “Folder” and click on it.

At this point you have created a new folder on your hard drive and you will simply need to type in the name you would like for that folder. Create a name that is logical that will reflect that this is where you store your information for your projects.

As you can see above I’ve chosen to name the folder, “My Projects”. This is a good starting point and if you happen to wish to store information for client projects this is a great way to distinguish your project folder from a folder you might call, “Client Projects”.

Once you’re inside of your “My Projects” folder go use the same process we used to create that folder and create a new folder with the name of your website.

Great! You now have a place to store all the information for your website.

Our next step is to create a simple text document so that we may create and store our information.

For this step you will right-click inside of your website folder and then click on “New”. This time rather than clicking on “Folder” we will click on “Text Document”.

The next step is to name your text document to reflect the information that you will store inside of it. As you can see I have named my text document to reflect that the usernames and passwords for my website will be stored there.

As you can see above I’m starting to build the simple text document so that I can store usernames and passwords for things such as my websites WordPress login info and other things such as my websites hosting Cpanel access info as well.

Above you can see how you may start to organize your information inside the simple username and passwords text document so that you have easy access to it.

So now you get a general idea of how to get started getting your website information organized. This is just one method, but if you’re familiar with using a spreadsheet such as Microsoft Excel or some other type of software then please feel free to use that software. The point is not so much which method you use to get organized, but that you get started somewhere so that you can easily retrieve vital information for future use.
