Build Your Online Business – Don’t Put All Your Eggs In One Basket

If you are going to take the time to build your online business you might as well do it right and build it on a solid foundation. What does that mean? That means beginning with the end in mind and creating a business that delivers value. As a result you will have created a business that not only brings in the level of revenue you desire, but one which will also grow to be a valuable asset.

One of the first things that you must do as you build your business is to not put all of your eggs in one basket. In other words if you are initially interested in monetizing your business using Google Adsense, don’t only use Google Adsense. As unfortunate as it is the Adsense accounts of honest, hard-working business people do get closed by Google without the business owner being at fault. I do not mention this lightly, but have seen the information first hand from a close associate of mine who is as straight an arrow as they come.

Fortunately for my associate he did start to diversify and started doing smart things such as becoming an affiliate of quality products, creating his own product line, building a list, and expanding his brand.

Another smart move he made was he started focusing on smart content marketing and diversifying his content offerings from just blog posts to PDF’s, Powerpoint presentations, podcasts, videos, etc. As a result of this not only did his traffic and revenue continue to increase, but his dependence on SEO to please Google actually decreased. Now if Google decided to change its algorithm on a daily basis it would have very little affect on his bottom line. The same was true of YouTube. If YouTube closed his account today it would have a minimal affect on his bottom line.

Building your online business on a solid foundation is about more than just creating a business that can prosper independently of Google, but building a business that can prosper independently of any one website, tool, product line, traffic generation technique, etc. Also keep in mind that if you are using any free online tool such as YouTube, Twitter, etc. that you can have your account shut down at anytime. Is that to say that you shouldn’t use those tools to the fullest of their potential? Absolutely not. Use them wisely with the knowledge that you should be using them to build your email and customer list.
